While shipping remains a steadfast and efficient mode of transporting energy, it is also a source of greenhouse gas emissions.

As a leading commercial manager in the industry, we are determined and geared to be part of the solution. By cultivating our scale, expertise and commitment, we are offering shipping solutions for our partners that help them achieve greater economic and environmental sustainability.

Our CO2-reduction strategy

We are developing digital innovation to cut industry emissions and increase returns.

One example is ZeroNorth, a digital business carved-out of Maersk Tankers with the vision to “digitalise shipping for the climate.” Through its core offering, the software Optimise, it epitomises how digitalisation can support the industry’s move towards more sustainable development.

Maersk Tankers has a proud history of technological innovation. We capitalise on existing and new fuel-saving solutions to help owners maximise vessel performance.

The Maersk Pelican serves as a demonstration. It was the world’s first product tanker vessel to use wind-propulsion technology to propel itself. The Pelican saw a 8.2% drop in fuel consumption and emissions over a one-year test period.

We seek to create and promote commercially viable solutions to realise lasting, positive change. With this in mind, we entered a strategic partnership with Mitsui and Cargill that centres on accelerating the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.

Only by coming together as an industry can we make real progress in lowering the carbon impact of shipping. We will take the lead where we have resources to succeed and will follow when other’s expertise can make a real difference.

Our commitment to sustainable shipping led us to cofound the Getting to Zero Coalition in 2019. We are also a member of the Global Maritime Forum and the Climate Partnership for Blue Denmark, which has launched initiatives to support a sustainable transition of the shipping industry both on a national and global level.

Overview

  • Safety

We ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, assets and protection of the environment. Safety relates to personal safety, operational safety and security, and we are responsible for carrying out our business efficiently and incident free.

  • Regulatory

We are exploring technology and fuel options to ensure a cost-effective compliance. Compliance with regulations requires investment and commitment, which should be shared equitably between all stakeholders in the industry.

  • Environment

We reduce the environmental impact of our operations by reducing CO2 and other harmful emissions. Climate change affects everyone, and we have a part to play by doing business in a way that minimizes our environmental impact.

  • Responsible business

We uphold our values and protect our name. Responsible business relates to anti-corruption, responsible procurement and respect for labour and human rights. This benefits the environment and the social fabric of society.

We will tend to it with sustainable solutions. It is the thread running through our purpose: We are here to pioneer solutions for the shipping industry that push the status quo; and match sustainable innovation with the diverse and evolving needs of both our partners and the planet.
